For seventy-seven years Americans have been crazy about Mickey Mouse and Disney. Mickey Mouse is probably the most famous Disney cartoon character. According to David Longest and Michael Stein in The Collectorâs Encyclopedia of Disneyana (1992), Mickey Mouse made his debut in the Colony Theatre in New York City on November 18, 1928 as âSteamboat Willie.â Next Mickey became a star in over 120 different cartoons and in âThe Mickey Mouse Clubâ television show in the 1950s.
Although Mickey was somewhat bratty, circles were used for the head, body, and ears of the original drawings. In 1939, a new, bold design for Mickey happened and his body became pear-shaped. His pupils were added to his eyes to let him have expressions. His character show real emotions and feelings. Then in 1940, animators added a three-dimensional aspect to his ears, but the change didnât stay. Mickey was shown as a round character making his competition characters flat in comparison. Today Mickey still looks the same, but changes his costume to fit the occasion.
Mickeyâs voice, at first, was that of Walt Disney. Later Jim Macdonald and Wayne Allwine took over those duties.
Although Walt Disney began as an artist, he had the talent to turn his ideas into film possibilities. He realized that Mickey Mouse was worth more than a few trips to the movies and a few theater tickets. With the help of Kay Kamen, who facilitated turning Walt Disneyâs ideas of Mickey Mouse into a childrenâs toy, he put the toy licensing contracts into the hands of the right people, such as Parker Brothers, Whitman Publishing, Louis Marx, Milton-Bradley, Fisher Price, George Borgiedt Distributors, Lionel Train, and Ohio Art, who immediately jumped on the bandwagon with Disney. Mickey Mouse has appeared on thousands merchandise items and now holds the title of Chief Greeter at the Disney theme parks.
People who collect Disneyana have found unlimited merchandise available, but the average homeâs space is limited so they have been forced to select a few specialty areas. Most collectors choose Mickey Mouse as a starting point and âgood stuffâ is still out there. Collectors must be prepared to pay for rare and quality toys. General collectors and cartoon art collectors also collect Disneyana and are interested in the Mickey Mouse name. The price keeps going up with all these collectors searching for vintage toys.
According to Kovelâs Antiques and Collectibles (2000), collectors still search for examples of work of Disney Studios and many commercial products are modeled after the other characters, such as Donald Duck and those from recent films.
To identify vintage Disneyana, you should look for three copyright marks that help establish the date and age of the toy. First, earliest Mickey Mouse toys dating from the late 1920s and early 1930s are marked Walter E. Disney or Walt E. Disney. A large amount from the 30s are marked Walt Disney Enterprises. Walt Disney Enterprises was the Disney Studio marketing and licensing branch of the Disney Studio. In 1939, the copyright identification switched to Walt Disney Productions. After 1940, labels should read Walt Disney Productions.
