Opinions on Tribal style Belly Dance?
So, do you enjoy watching it or do you find yourself bored? If you do enjoy it, what are your favorite aspects of the dance? If you are a belly dancer, what types of belly dance do you do and what are your opinions on Tribal style?
Well that depends on a lot of things. For example if it's a group number only I usually don't enjoy watching it as much as if it's a duet or solo. How much I enjoy it often depends on the repetiore of movements the group employs. Tribal style is based on group improvisation using cues to signal what move will be performed. In this way I can find it somewhat intrigueing to watch because I try to pick out what their cues are and what the cues are saying. However this sometimes limits the amount of moves a group uses. Solo's are much freeer in that the dancer can unse any moves without having to worry about cues. Duet's can sometimes be interesting to watch as well, especially if they two participating are very playful and energetic. I've seen some mock dance off's and comedic type things but also some well done pieces in which the dnacers were so in sync that you could swear it was somone dancing in front of a mirror instead of two different dancers. Another thing is that in a group performance I like to see faster more energetic pieces. Slower sensous pieces seem to be better suited for solos in this style at least in my opinion. If it's a slow tribal piece I often do find myself getting a little bored because it's often too much repitition which again ties in partially with the whole improvisation and cues stuff. In my experience Tribal is more entertaining and fun if you are actively participating in it but is not quite as entertaining to me as a spectator. What I do like about tribal is that the women often do form very close bonds and band together as their own little tribe. This sense of sisterhood and belonging is one of the things that really seems to get eccentuated in tribal. Although there is a similar sense of being a "tribe" among memebers of a troupe it seems to me as though it is stronger among triabl than it is among the nightclub styles. The other aspect of tribal that I like is the improvisation it is amazing to see so many people improvising a dance together, heck I have a hard enough time on my own. This is something that is rarely seen or done in nighclub styles. Although there are solouists who dso improvisation it's not all that common for groups outside tribal style to do it. Partially because it's traditionally a womens solo dance and also because group members tend to be highly choreographed allowing at most a few phrases of a song in which an individual member gets a chance at solo improv. I'm a bellydancer I generally do American style or Egyptian Style but, I love and attempt all styles and am trying to become more fluent in Lebanese and Turkish styles especially. Egyptian will probably always be my favorite though.
