The Art of Gauging Earlobes by Mark Wilson
Gauging earlobes is nothing new. Since the dawn of mankind, many different civilizations have pierced various parts of their body for either cultural or religious reasons, and then stretched the piercing to accommodate larger diameter inserts. Stretching piercings is now known as gauging to many, because it involves progressively inserting larger gauge jewelry until the piercing remains permanently set at the required diameter.
Today, stretching or gauging earlobes is a fashion statement, and you can begin the process once your piercing has completely healed. Always start with a size larger than your initial piercing and work up a step at a time - never skip a step or you could cause yourself unnecessary pain and damage your earlobe.
Your initial piercing will generally be 0.8 mm or 20 gauge (known as 20g) or 18g (1.0mm). It could even be 16g with a professional piercer, although in each of these cases it will be fine to start off your stretching at 16g. Note that as the gauge reduces, the hole size increases up to 00g which is 9.0mm -10mm. Anything larger is stated in millimeters. You will find the fleshy past of the earlobe fairly easy to stretch, while the denser cartilage is more resistant to deformation and will take a good bit longer.
It is important that once you start you have to keep going, because once you stop, your piercings will revert to the original size and may eventually close up. There will a point at around 2g when the hole will not revert back to its original size. Note that gauge numbers drop in even numbers, so if you start at 16g, your next should 14g, then 12g and so on.
If you are not used to the terminology used in gauging earlobes, it can be confusing because the smaller the gauge, the greater the size of the piercing. So 'gauging down' is used to refer to increasing the diameter of your piercing by one step or gauge.
There is more than one stretching technique, and for each it is critical that you allow the stretching to heal properly before gauging your earlobes down to the next size. Three possible methods are insertion tapers, taper spikes and taper rings. Here is how they are used:
First you will need ear jewelry the size of your new expanded piercing. You will also need some lubricant, preferably water-based or emulsion such as jojoba. Emu oil will also do, but keep clear of mineral oils such as petrolatum (Vaseline) that are susceptible to bacterial contamination. First warm your ear lobes up with some warm water and then follow the procedure below for each of the three methods.
Before starting, wash your hands in anti-bacterial unperfumed soap, then smear the taper, spike or ring and also the jewelry, if used, with the lubricant to make insertion easier. Gauging earlobes can easily expose your ears to bacteria, and taking these precautions will help speed up the procedure and also help keep your piercing free of bacteria.
Insertion Tapers: These are rods of about 3 inches in length that taper up to the next size you are aiming for. Insert the narrow end of the taper into your piercing. Gently work it through, rotating it if necessary to make it easier. When the thicker end reaches your earlobe, press the pin of the ear jewelry against it and follow it through along with the end of the insertion taper.
Taper Spikes: These are shorter than insertion tapers, and can worn just like jewelry. As the piercing heals, they can be progressively pushed through making a larger hole. They are secured using small plastic bands
Taper Rings: This is a way of gauging earlobes using ear jewelry that has one end of greater diameter than the other. It works in much the same way as the insertion tapers, only rather than following the taper through your lobes with the jewelry, the jewelry pin itself tapers to a gauge down from the previous gauge.
Finally, wash your hands once more with the anti-bacterial soap. There may be some discomfort when carrying out any of these procedures, but it should not cause particularly severe pain, and the piercing should not bleed. If either of these is experienced, then stop. Try again once your original piercing has healed better.
Your earlobes will feel uncomfortable for a short while, but the initial pain should ease after 24 hours, although in order to reduce multiplying this discomfort you may want to stretch both earlobes at the same time. Wash them with anti-bacterial soap and sea salt in water will also help keep them from infection.
Gauging earlobes is not difficult, and does not need a professional to carry it out, but make sure that your piercings are fully healed between gauge changes.
